I need to mention that all the food made here at The Firelight Inn is made from local ingredients purchased from local sustainable markets in the Duluth area. Our signature Firelight Inn sugar cookies made here everyday are in the “never empty cookie jar” in the historic butler’s pantry.
Our historic building is 99 years old this year and was built by George G. Barnum (a distant relative of P.T. Barnum of the famous circus) nestled on a quiet secluded dead end street on an acre of land. We are proud to carry on Mr. Barnum’s traditions of hospitality and welcoming.

Oregon Creek rushes thunderously to Lake Superior today

I had to stop working in the kitchen this afternoon to take a picture from the kitchen window as the rain brought Oregon Creek below to “full strength”. Many native Duluthians know it as “the ravine” in the historic Congdon neighborhood. Oregon Creek begins to flow from a spring by Hartley Field and continues down Duluth’s hillside winding and flowing where it can be seen and unseen until is reaches Lake Superior. We are told the creek flows directly under 21st Avenue East and Superior Street before reaching the big lake.
The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast is located on the dead end street and adjoins Oregon Creek. Today after all the wind and rain, the big boulders on the bed of the creek could not be seen–only lots of water and quite muddy water too as street run off from the road construction on Woodland Avenue feeds into the Creek too.

The sound of the creek today was loud as it reminded us of the strength of Mother Nature. Oh, we can’t wait to see the sun come out–hopefully tomorrow–and shine on the lush green grass and fragrant flowers planted in the gardens of The Firelight Inn B&B. We will also once again hear the sound of the babbling creek–the perfect B&B setting.

We hope to see you on your next trip to Duluth!

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

Jim dug out an old recipe of his mother’s the other day and WOW–they were a hit with the folks enjoying The Firelight Inn B&B during the weekend. The smell of fresh, warm cookies coming from the kitchen arose their senses and the cookie jar in the butler’s pantry was empty before we knew it. Here’s the recipe for Carolyn’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies:

1 cup shortening
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon hot water
1 cup nuts
1 package chocolate chips
2 cups oatmeal

Cream together shortening and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients together. Dissolve baking soda in hot water and add to the creamed mixture. Add flour mixture alternately with oatmeal. Add chips and nuts when mixed. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes. Enjoy and get ready to make another batch!

We hope to see you on your next trip to Duluth!
