Duluth attractions

So much to do in Duluth Minnesota

There is so much to do in Duluth this time of year. Whether you make plans to visit or drive to our fabulous city just for the day, Duluth offers outdoor activities, museums, theatre and nightlife. Here’s a sampling of what’s going on the next few days.

Friday, July 24th, you can experience an advanced no lights night hike naturalist program at 9:45 p.m. at Pattison Amnicon State Park in Superior, Wisconsin (not a long drive from The Firelight Inn). More information at (715)399-3111.

“Beauty and the Beast” is being performed at the Duluth Playhouse on Friday and Saturday, July 24th and 25th at 7:30 p.m.

“Footloose” is performed at the Marshall Performing Arts Center at UMD on Friday and Saturday nights, July 24th and 25th at 7:30 p.m. We’re planning to get to that ourselves–gotta love that music!

The Movie in the Park at Leif Ericson Park on Friday night just after sundown is Journey to the Center of the Earth–3D. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair for your outdoor movie viewing.

On Friday, July 24th, “St. Anyway” (rock/folk) music is performed at The Amazing Grace Bakery & Cafe in Canal Park. Joy went to grade school with the owner Marcie!

The Victor Mourning and Greg Tiburzi (folk) performs at 8:00 p.m. at Beaner’s Central on Friday, July 24th.

Dubh Linn Irish Pub, 109 West Superior Street offers a pub supper and comedy show on Friday at 7:00 p.m. July 24th.

Jazz music is offered from 3-7 p.m. on Saturdays at the Club Saratoga in Canal Park.

Woodies on the Water Wooden Boat Festival happens Saturday, July 25th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Barker’s Island Marina in Superior, WI. That is always a good time!

So make your plans now to get to The Firelight Inn this weekend! We’re adding IPod docking stations to every suite this week. Just another modern amenity in our almost 100 year old mansion.

Innkeepers Jim and Joy Fischer Passion Statement

We recently were added to a great website www.passionateinnkeepers.com and were asked to write an Innkeeper Passion Statement telling about the passion we have for the craft of inn keeping and what drives us and keeps us motivated and focused on making our bed and breakfast the best it can be. Following it that statement that Jim and I submitted for inclusion on that website.

When we stayed in our first bed and breakfast together, we were intrigued with the thoughts of being innkeepers. We went home from that bed and breakfast and bought every book on the subject, started reading and researching and writing a business plan, attending seminars and workshops and shopping for the perfect property. It was almost two years later to the day when we moved into the property which is now The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast in Duluth, Minnesota.

Our desire was to create a luxurious lodging property where people would stay and spend quality time together restoring the balance to their lives and renewing their relationships. We realized when we were working in the corporate jobs in the big city that life was easily slipping away and we barely took time for one another much less just resting. So we quit our jobs and moved from Bloomington, MN to Duluth, MN, found the perfect historic mansion and turned it into a luxury bed and breakfast inn.

We have found a good balance of working and taking time for ourselves as we learned early in our business that no guest wants to feel like a burden to a tired innkeeper. We strive to give over-the-top service to each guest and find the balance between hovering over our guests and being available to them for whatever they may need from us. We have made wonderful friends through inn keeping both in our guests and other innkeepers throughout the country. The journal in each suite where folks can write about their stay is our motivation to prepare the suite for another guest so that they also may be restored, renewed and refreshed.

We feel very fortunate to live in a beautiful historic mansion, greet people from all over the world and share the history of George G. Barnum’s home. Mr. Barnum was in the grain business in Duluth, Minnesota at the turn of the century but the gift of hospitality was a Barnum tradition that we will continue.
