We remember it well–June 17, 1998 Joy was still hanging curtains in the Barnum Suite at The Firelight Inn Duluth Bed and Breakfast as Jim greeted our first guests checking in to stay with us for Grandma’s Marathon. I forgot the silverware in the first breakfast basket we delivered–I was so embarrassed. We’ve learned a lot through the years and are so very thankful for all the folks we meet and chat with each and every day. We will be greeting guests again today that will be running this weekend’s 2010 Duluth Marathon!

It has been an incredible 13 years and we are so very proud of the business we created. We are also humble to live in this beautiful mansion and share it with folks who travel from all over the world to enjoy Duluth, Minnesota.

Here’s the highlights through the years…

1998 – We move into 2211 E 3rd Street in February and after a trip to San Francisco to attend our first innkeeping conference, The Firelight Inn opens on June 17, 1998.

1999 – The Editor of the Star Tribune Taste Section stays with us and then features The Firelight Inn in the Taste Section of the newspaper saying “The Fischers know breakfast!”

2000 – We begin the new millennium with a New Year’s Eve celebration with guests and neighbors with a midnight buffet. Jim and I enjoy a wonderful Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII) conference in Hilton Head, SC.

2001 – We demolish the old kitchen down to the brick walls and in 21 days we have a beautiful new kitchen, room to work, storage for everything and a classy look!

2002 – We traveled to Chicago to attend a Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII) Conference and have a great time at the Roaring 20’s party.

2003 – The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast becomes a proud member of Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America.

2004 – We had a great vacation in New York City. The highlight was meeting and chatting with Diane Sawyer who said we had “the dream job” being innkeepers. Oh Diane–you have the dream job! We attended the PAII conference in Providence, RI.

2005 – The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek was honored to be chosen “Best for Honeymoon/Anniversary” by Inn travelers.

2006 – Again The Firelight Inn is chosen “Best for Honeymoon/Anniversary”.

2007 – We take a road trip to the West Coast and then head to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho for a great Select Registry innkeeping conference celebrating their 35th anniversary.

2008 – Better Homes and Gardens writes “Experience Old World hospitality without leaving the USA” referring to The Firelight Inn Bed and Breakfast.

2009 – Jim is offered a part-time job at Bix Produce delivering fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy products, herbs and more to Duluth’s finest restaurants. Joy misses the team work three mornings a week as Jim works outside the Inn!

2010 – We celebrate 100 years of history as the historic home of George G. Barnum is 100 years old. Open House 10/10/10 from 1-3 p.m. at The Firelight Inn.

We hope to see you on your next trip to Duluth!
