Edmund Fitzgerald Remembered at Split Rock Lighthouse

35 years ago today the Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Lake Superior and the lighthouse at Split Rock was lit in honor of the 29 men that were lost in that great storm November 10, 1975.

Innkeepers Jim and Joy drove to Split Rock Lighthouse this afternoon and took in the ceremony as the sun was setting. The bell tolled 30 times in all–29 times for the men lost from the Edmund Fitzgerald and one more toll for all those who have perished in ship wrecks in Lake Superior.

It was a blustery afternoon but the sunset was beautiful and lots of people gathered around the lighthouse for this remembrance. We even met returning guests of ours who were there for the ceremony.  We enjoyed catching up with them and chatting about the event.  The beacon on the lighthouse was lit and would remain lit until 7 p.m. tonight.
