Northern Harrier

A hawk visits nearby The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast early one morning and caused quite a commotion!

The Northern Harrier hawk was perched on a limb on the edge of Oregon Creek by The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast in Duluth MN

There was quite the commotion the other morning when we arrived in the kitchen at The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast!  The crows were making such a racket as well as the bluebirds.  They were upset about the visitor that was “hunting” for breakfast and had landed on a branch of a nearby tree with its breakfast.  We got out our binoculars and the camera and here’s what we found!

We researched in our Birds of Minnesota Field Guide and tried to match up what we were looking at with all the descriptions in the guide.  We discovered our visitor to be a Northern Harrier.  The male is a slim, low-flying hawk with silver gray color, a large white rump and a white belly.  The tips of the wings were black and yellow eyes just as the guide described.

The bluebirds and crows were screeching loudly either to alert the other birds and wildlife or they were just letting the hawk know he had invaded our serene location.  After about 30 minutes of the Northern Harrier enjoying his breakfast, he was on his way and the noise from the other birds was over.

Mornings at The Firelight Inn B&B are usually quiet and calm with the sounds of chirping birds and the calming sound of Oregon Creek flowing to Lake Superior as the coffee is made and preparations for breakfast begin.  That specific morning we were preparing Herb Baked Eggs, Rosemary Roasted Potatoes, Fresh Peach Crisp, Double Orange Scones and Apple Walnut Breakfast Cake, Orange Juice and Coffee with cream and sugar.

We would love the opportunity to fix breakfast for you and hope we greet you soon at our historic home.  We are quite sure it will be calm, quiet and serene for your stay!
