News from The Firelight Inn Duluth Bed and Breakfast

Innkeeper Jim is a proud Grandfather today in Duluth as his daughter Angie gave birth to Benjamin William last night! Mom, Dad and baby boy are doing well as they get to know one another. Ben weighed in at 8 pounds as he entered the world in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Jim has already picked out Ben’s first fishing pole and plans to teach him to catch the big bass like Grampa! We’re looking forward to travel soon to meet our Grandson and visit with the new family.

Firelight Inn Bed and Breakfast Recipe Featured at University of Georgia Event

Double Orange Scones from The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast in Duluth MN were featured on the menu of a special event at The University of Georgia. We were contacted by the Food Services Department at The University of Georgia requesting that we submit a recipe for their 2nd Annual Event “A Sunset Breakfast — Dawn Inspired Dishes Served at Dusk”. We submitted our recipe for Glazed Double Orange Scones which is a favorite of our guests at The Firelight Inn.

The focus of the special event on October 13, 2011 was to give students at the University of Georgia the dining experience of breakfast at Bed and Breakfast establishments from across the United States. The full menu featured 21 recipes from prominent Bed and Breakfast locations and was served to 8,700 hungry students in four dining commons.

Some of the other breakfast items that were included in this special sunset breakfast are Pumpkin Pancakes from the 1882 Aleksander House Bed and Breakfast in Louisville, KY, Gruyere Bacon and Ham Strata from the Korner Kottage in Suttons Bay, MI, Pineapple Zucchini Bread from Runnymede Country Inn in Fredericksburg, TX and Minted Fruit Salad from Amado Territory Inn from Amado, AZ. We’ve included a picture of the full menu!

The University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia received the Loyal E. Horton Menu Award from the National Association of College and University Food Services competing against more than 600 other institutions. Visit them online at www.uga.edu/foodservice.

The Firelight Inn’s recipe for Glazed Double Orange Scones was adapted for use by the University of Georgia’s chefs and food production teams in order to serve it to 8700 students. We thought it might interest you to see how much was required to feed the 8700 students.

African Violets at The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast

It may be snowing outside today but the African Violets at The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast are healthy and thriving. We have over 25 plants that enjoy the sunlight streaming in the dining room windows and 24 hour light from various table lamps.

We have been enjoying African Violets for over thirty years when Joy’s Mom gave her her first African Violet plant. During the winter months this year we grew new violets from leaves of overgrown plants. We’re confident that by summer they will be blooming in colors of pink, purple and white. The picture shows the new violets as they have become beautiful plants that will be placed around The Firelight Inn.

What are you celebrating in your life today? We would love to be part of your vacation, romantic getaway, anniversary, birthday or honeymoon. Give us a call and make your reservations today! Mention this blog and we’ll place fresh flowers in your suite with your weekend stay!

King and Queen of Norway to Visit Duluth MN

King Harald V of Norway and Queen Sonja intend to visit Duluth MN on October 17, 2011 for the rededication of the Enger Tower. The tower was originally dedicated in 1939 by his father, then-Crown Prince Olav.

Enger Tower is named for Bert Enger, a native of Norway who immigrated to Duluth and made a fortune selling furniture. The location of Enger Tower is 16th Avenue West and Skyline Parkway in Duluth Minnesota. It cost $30,000 to build and is 70 feet tall and six stories high. On a clear day visitors can see 31.4 miles from the top of the tower.

We don’t know if the King and Queen will stay at The Firelight Inn Duluth MN Bed and Breakfast but you can feel like a King and Queen when you stay with us on your next trip to Duluth!
