Twin Ports Lighthouse Days in Canal Park, Duluth Minnesota

Travel to Duluth Minnesota and enjoy the 9th Annual Twin Ports Lighthouse Days August 4-7, 2011 at the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center in Canal Park. This event will feature lighthouse films and history walks which will take place inside and outside the museum. All of the programs are free and open to the general public and we’re sure our guests at The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast will be taking advantage of this festival.

This special “Twin Ports Lighthouse Days” is a celebration of the five distinctive lighthouses of the Twin Ports and the lighthouses of Lake Superior. We need to remind you, however, that the lighthouses in Canal Park are unfortunately not open to the public, although exterior viewing and photographs are available. This annual event is held around the anniversary of August 7th, 1789 which is the date President George Washington signed the Ninth Act of Congress federalizing our nation’s lighthouses.

The pier history tours with Park Rangers will rediscover the history of Duluth’s three lighthouses, the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge and the piers. This is just one of the fun activities to take part in while you are in Duluth Minnesota. There is hiking, biking, sailing, charter boat fishing, Vista Boat excursions, walking along the Lake Walk and skipping rocks in Lake Superior!

We hope to see you on your next trip to Duluth and greet you at The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Duluth bed and breakfast!

Your Summer 2011 Plans Should Include The Duluth Music & Maritime Festival

Are you looking for a special long-weekend event to fill your summer travel plans? The Duluth Music and Maritime Festival is a natural extension of Tall Ships 2010 with more emphasis on entertainment. July 15-18, 2011 is the date and the festival will take place on Lake Superior’s waterfront behind Grandma’s Sports Garden, Bellisio’s and the Paulucci Building. No long lines for ship tours, just fun and entertainment, music and a really big lake!

Attendees will enjoy food and refreshments, musical performances, dockside viewing of 3 tall ships, and the chance to mingle with Captain Jack Sparrow. Highlights of the festival include performances by some of Minnesota’s and the nation’s finest entertainers, including: The Suburbs, Gear Daddies, Cracker, Retribution Gospel Choir, Tom Kastle, Ninety to the Dozen, AM Rubin, Bounding Man and programs by the Duluth Playhouse.

There will be three tall ships in the harbor during the festival in July 2011 for viewing dockside. The Lynx and the Pride of Baltimore II will offer “Sail Aways” which are educational day sails providing not only an educational opportunity into daily life aboard a tall ship, but also the grandeur of experiencing Lake Superior under sail. Tickets for the day sails range from $95 to $125 per person, based on the ship, and range in length from two to three hours. The third ship is the U.S. Brig Niagara.

A multi-day festival pass is available for $40 including all concerts and $20 daily passes and $25 weekend passes will be available. Get more information at www.visitduluth.com.

The Sixth Annual Bayfront Reggae and World Musical Festival will also be held the same weekend in Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth, so if you like music, you need to be here!

We would love the opportunity to meet you and provide a historic Duluth bed and breakfast experience at The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek. Enjoy the festival and a Duluth Minnesota romantic getaway together at our Inn.

Edmund Fitzgerald Remembered at Split Rock Lighthouse

35 years ago today the Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Lake Superior and the lighthouse at Split Rock was lit in honor of the 29 men that were lost in that great storm November 10, 1975.

Innkeepers Jim and Joy drove to Split Rock Lighthouse this afternoon and took in the ceremony as the sun was setting. The bell tolled 30 times in all–29 times for the men lost from the Edmund Fitzgerald and one more toll for all those who have perished in ship wrecks in Lake Superior.

It was a blustery afternoon but the sunset was beautiful and lots of people gathered around the lighthouse. We even met returning guests of The Firelight Inn who were there for the ceremony. The beacon on the lighthouse was lit and would remain lit until 7 p.m. tonight.
